A shop fascia rarely fits on a single sheet. Twelve metres of frontage means four or five panels and as many joints. The rule every fabricator knows from the shop floor is simple: a joint must not pass through a letter. In AxisMod that rule had to become part of the configurator, because the breakdown generates itself for any frontage length, letter size and wordmark alignment.
Where the rule comes from
A panel joint is always a visible line: a shadow, a slight shift in tone, a bead of sealant. On the plain field of a fascia the eye tolerates it. When it crosses a letter it stops being a construction detail and becomes a mistake the client can see from across the street. Then there is installation: a letter fixed to two panels at once means two reference points, two tolerances and twice the chance that the face does not sit in one plane.
On the shop floor this is solved with a pencil: shift the joint a few centimetres into the gap between letters and move on. The problem is that a configurator has no pencil. It has a front, a sheet and a wordmark, and it has to land in the right place every time without manual correction.
What the configurator does
Once the survey dimensions are entered and a fascia system is chosen, AxisMod proposes a breakdown in "Auto by sheet" mode. Three things happen underneath:
- The wordmark gets protection zones. Every letter reserves an area where a joint is not allowed to appear, with an allowance for the gap and for installation.
- Joints land only in the gaps between letters or outside the wordmark. The configurator is not looking for "anywhere outside a letter", only for positions that look intentional, for example symmetrical about the wordmark.
- Panels come out at similar lengths. Of the possible layouts it picks the one closest to an even split, so the material order and the nesting are not complicated by one short panel at the end.
You can see the result on the elevation drawing the moment you change the frontage length or the letter size: the joint lines jump into the gaps, and the panel and frame post counts update in the summary.
Three fronts, three breakdowns
The easiest way to see it is three configurations of the same brand. Only the frontage length and the wordmark alignment change; the configurator works out the rest.



On a short front the wordmark fits entirely on one panel. On a long one the configurator has to place a joint inside the wordmark, but it does so only in a gap between letters, and shortens the neighbouring panels so the rest of the breakdown stays regular.
Why the first version did not work
The first attempt passed every test on paper and cut straight through the "O" on a real wordmark. The reason was mundane: we treated the joint as a line with no width, when it is really a gap with a tolerance on either side. The second trap: two letters close together left a "hole" between them so narrow that a joint fitted there only in theory. After the fix we tested the breakdown on several hundred combinations of length, letter size and alignment. Zero intersections.
The lesson that stays: a shop-floor rule sounds trivial until you have to write it down so that it works without a human.
What else comes out of the letter geometry
Since the configurator knows the exact outline of every letter, the same information drives two more parts of the production package:
- Illumination. The number of LED modules, their power and the power supply selection follow from the letter area, not from a guess. The electrical schedule and the BOM calculate themselves.
- Files for production. Each letter gets its own face, return and back files with the illumination and fixing layout, ready to open on the shop floor without redrawing.
A small detail from the same family: file names are built from the site identifier, not the shop name. Diacritics in names used to produce confusing, "broken" file names on the shop floor.
What this means for the client
A chain with twenty locations gets twenty breakdowns, each of which respects the wordmark, without twenty manual corrections. The fabricator gets panels of similar length and letters that always sit on a single panel. And I no longer check every elevation with a pencil in hand.
