Letters that fit the fascia the first time

How the AxisMod fascia module sizes and places a wordmark from the real letter shapes, why the first version got it wrong, and what the client gets in the pack.

On a shop front the wordmark is the job. The panel, the frame, the brackets and the LED all exist to hold it flat, keep it in one plane and light it after dark. So the expensive mistake on a fascia is rarely a crooked panel. It is a set of letters that turn out to be the wrong size for the field they have to sit in, discovered when they are already cut, painted and fitted with LED. The fascia module in AxisMod sizes and places the wordmark from the real shape of every letter, and that same shape then drives the elevation, the letter specification and the fixing layout.

The mistake you only see on the wall

Scaling a wordmark looks like the simplest part of a fascia job, and it is the part that gets redone most often. The reason is that the fascia is not the field the letters live in. Take off the accent band, the returns at both ends, the margin you need so the letters do not crowd the edge, and the clear field is smaller than the sign. Then the wordmark has to sit centred in what is left, optically rather than arithmetically, because a name with a descender or a tall first capital does not balance the way a rectangle does.

On the shop floor this is judged by eye, and by eye it usually works. The trouble starts when the same brand goes onto fronts of different lengths and heights. Letters are cut from sheet, folded, painted and wired before anyone stands in front of the building, and there is no trimming them on site. A wordmark that is too tall for the field means new material, a second paint run, a second electrical fit-out and another visit with the lift. That is why I treat "the letters run off the fascia" as a defect on the same level as a joint through a letter, not as a matter of taste.

What the module does with a wordmark

The fascia module works out the clear field for the front in front of it, then fits the wordmark into that field.

  • You choose a size class, and the module works out what that class means on this particular front, so the same brand reads consistently on a short unit and on a long one.
  • The wordmark is kept clear of the accent band, the returns and the panel edges, with room left for fixings and, on halo letters, for the glow that has to sit on the panel and not disappear over the edge.
  • Change the fascia height or switch the accent band on, and the letters move themselves rather than waiting for you to notice the clash.
  • The day and dusk preview shows the result at full size on the building, so the letter type is chosen against the night effect rather than against a flat drawing.

The fit does not depend on how the letters are made. A printed wordmark on vinyl is placed in the clear field exactly like push-through, face-lit, halo or flat-cut letters, because all five types are laid out from the same outlines. Only what happens after the layout differs: a print gets a cutting path, a built-up letter gets a face, returns and a back.

Because the outlines are known, the rest of the pack comes from the same source: the elevation carries the letter dimensions, the letter specification and the electrical schedule follow the real letter areas, and each letter gets its own production file with its fixing layout on it.

Why the first version was wrong

The first version trusted the typeface. Every typeface carries its own declared measurements, and what is declared does not have to match what is actually drawn. I sized the letters from the declared figure, which was the tidy assumption, and every check on a flat layout passed.

On a real front it fell apart immediately. Put that wordmark on a station at full size and the capitals ran well over the top of the clear field and into the accent band, badly enough that nobody would have argued about it. Flat artwork hides this: on a sheet the letters are simply "the right proportion to each other", and the error only becomes visible when the wordmark has a building behind it.

The fix was to stop trusting declared numbers and measure the shapes themselves. Sizing, centring and the spacing between letters all come off the drawn outlines now, and the preview, the drawing and the production files cannot disagree, because there is only one set of shapes underneath. The lesson I would keep from it: a drawing lies quietly, a wall does not.

Fixings that land in metal

The same outlines solved a second problem that installers know well. A fixing point marked on a nominal rectangle around a letter can easily end up in the counter of an O, in the gap of an A or just off the edge of a thin stroke, and then somebody on the lift is drilling into air and improvising. The module places fixings inside the drawn stroke of the letter, so every position has material behind it. The layout of the letters and the layout of their fixings are made in one go: the moment the wordmark is placed, the fixing positions exist with it, and they travel on the production file of each letter rather than being worked out again later. The standoffs and locators are counted into the BOM instead of being picked up on the way to site.

What this means for a client

The wordmark is approved at full size on the building, not as artwork on a sheet, so the size conversation happens before anything is cut. The pack that follows agrees with itself: elevation, letter specification, electrical schedule and fixing layout all come from the same letter shapes, so the fabricator is not reconciling three documents and the installer is not measuring the fascia again in the cold. For a chain it matters more than for a single unit, because every site has a different front, and the brand has to read the same on all of them without anybody rescaling letters by hand twenty times.
