Project narrative

Overview

PEN WORLD is a concept project for a rotating stationery display, taken from the sales offer to the production plan. One product, two documents: the first sells it, the second lets a workshop build it.

The stand had to show a full colour range on less than half a square metre, turn in the customer's hand and move without being dismantled. At the same time every part had to be buildable in an ordinary workshop: laser-cut sheet steel, bent, welded and powder coated.

Concept

The whole colour range in one turn

The four walls of the body have two roles. The wide ones carry full rows of clear pockets, the narrow ones hold a three-dimensional pen mock-up that says what is sold here from the far end of the aisle. Chamfered corners on the base and body soften the outline in the walkway, and the bearing-mounted rotation lets a customer see the full range without walking around the stand.

Ergonomics

Six levels set to the eye line

The levels are spaced every 200 mm, from 592 to 1592 mm. The top one lands at an adult's eye line and is the premium position, the next three sit in the zone of easy sight and reach, and the two lowest serve the children's range and stock. A 150 mm pen sits 57 mm deep in the pocket, so 93 mm of the barrel stays visible, and the colour variant is marked on the front of the strip.

Structure

A fixed base, a rotating body

The structure is split into four assemblies: the mobile base, the rotation unit, the body and the display fittings. The base is welded from 2 and 3 mm sheet, with a 10 mm ballast plate and four swivel castors hidden in the plinth, two of them braked. The steel plinth also works as a bumper: a shopping trolley hits steel, not the pockets. The body drops onto the shaft flange, so it can be removed for transport without taking the bearing unit apart.

Service

A display change in half a minute

The cladding panels have side notches: a panel goes over the screw heads, drops 30 mm and locks under its own weight. The 3 mm acrylic pockets hang on pins and lift out upwards, and the label strips hold on magnets. Store staff replace a damaged pocket themselves in a matter of seconds. The double-sided topper is screwed from the inside, so seasonal graphics change without touching the structure.

Production

A plan a workshop can work from

The production plan walks through the product one assembly at a time: an exploded view with item numbers, flat patterns with bend lines, a build description and a list of cutting files. The bill of materials gives material, size, quantity, weight and process for every item, including the weight of the empty stand and the weight fully stocked. The document closes with a welding specification listing weld type, method and quality class for each joint.

Result

The stand at the point of sale

The visualisations show the stand where it has to work: in the aisle, at the checkout and in a narrow passage. The tall silhouette sets the display apart from the shelving, the four-sided layout serves traffic from every direction, and the small footprint does not narrow the walkway. These are the views where a buyer sees scale and placement at once.
